Regular -er Verbs
Most French verbs end in -er, making this the most important conjugation pattern to learn. Master the six endings and you'll unlock hundreds of verbs at once.
-er verb endings (parler)
je parle
tu parles
il/elle parle
nous parlons
vous parlez
ils/elles parlent
Negation: ne + verb + pas
Je ne parle pas espagnol. — I don't speak Spanish.
Common mistakes — -er verb conjugation
✗ elle dancez
✓ elle danse: -ez is only the vous ending. Il/elle uses -e.
✗ nous mangons
✓ nous mangeons: -ger verbs keep the -e to preserve the soft g: mangeons, nageons, voyageons.
✗ ils parlent-ent
✓ ils parlent: the stem is parl-, the ending is -ent. Don't add -ent twice.
✗ je ne parle pas le français
✓ je ne parle pas français: no article with languages after parler.
✗ tu habites à la Montréal
✓ tu habites à Montréal: no article before city names.
